Remember last winter?

Don't get caught without Winter and Snow Tyres!

Only winter tyres are designed to excel in colder temperatures, slush, snow and ice. There is no one tyre that is the fastest on a track, longest wearing and controllable in snow - so drivers have to compromise and if you are in a snow climate you should only choose a set of winter tyres.

Stopping Distances - Braking at 30mph

A car travelling at 30mph and fitted with winter tyres will stop in 35metres on a winters road while a car fitted with standard tyres will stop at around 43metres.

The difference could be vital.

Standard Tyres vs Cold Weather Tyres

Standard tyres provide excellent traction in high temperatures and good weather conditions. As the temperatures and weather conditions deteriorate towards winter, the traction and performance of standard tyres start to fall.

Winter tyres provide more small tread areas, increasing traction on snow and in wet conditions, allowing better grip and water to escape from under the tyre more easily. It is highly beneficial to be on the correct type of tyre at the correct time of year.

Your Questions Answered:

Q: Why buy Cold weather Tyres?

A: Winter tyres greatly improve your stopping distances and traction control in temperatures below 7°C. This will enable you to travel safely and at a reasonable speed in cold, wet, ice and snow conditions.

Q: Are Cold weather tyres expensive?

A: No, winter tyres are a very good investment. Whilst you are running your winter tyres, you are saving tread in your summer tyres and pre-longing their life. By running the correct tyre throughout the year you are lowering the risk of damaging your vehicle and the potential costs.

Q: How many Cold weather tyres should I buy?

A: We recommend a full set of 4. This will give you good all-round traction in temperatures below 7°C and preserve the life of your summer tyres. We also recommend buying a wheel & winter tyre package, so you can easily swap your summer and winter tyres without incurring fitting costs each time.

Q: How long will my Cold weather tyres last?

A: Your winter tyres will typically last as long as your summer tyres do, as long as you change them at the correct time of year. Depending on your milage they should typically last about 3 years and prelong the life of your summer tyres.

Q: Will my insurance go up if I fit Cold weather tyres?

A: No. The large majority of main insurers do not charge extra for fitting winter tyres at the correct time of year.

Cold weather Tyres and Traction Control

Traction control helps you from overpowering your tyres but it does not improve the traction of your tyres. So the only way to improve your cars performance in the cold weather is to use cold weather tyres that provide more grip and therefore improving the traction control.

Cold weather Tyres and ABS Brakes

ABS brakes stop you locking up your tyres and limit braking to the traction level of your tyres, so they do not improve actually improve the traction of your tyre. So the only way to improve your cars performance in the winter is to use cold weather tyres that provide more grip and therefore improving the traction level for ABS brakes.

Cold weather Tyres For 4 Wheel Drive and All Wheel Drive

AWD and 4WD definitely provide drivers with a great advantage in winter performance; but this advantage would be improved further if you use winter tyres. All of the reasons for choosing AWD and 4WD cars are the same reasons for choosing winter tyres. Cold weather tyres also provide additional benefits for stopping and turning AWD/4WD cars.
